Do not use a cable lock as your only form of protection: even the thickest cable can be cut in seconds with bolt croppers. Always use a D-lock or chain; cable locks are useful for securing the front wheel or saddle, but must be used with a good D-lock or chain to secure the frame and rear wheel. Avoid combination locks: they can be forced more easily than a key lock.

Kryptonite Kryptolok + cable

Kryptonite Kryptolok + cable

£35 with cable or £30 without

Independently rated by Sold Secure as being Silver standard, as required by most insurance companies. A good, reliable, all-metal lock from a well-established manufacturer, built to last for years. Available with a cable for locking up your front wheel, and comes with a carrying bracket.

Kryptonite chain lock

Kryptonite chain lock

£35

Sold Secure Bronze rated. A chain is ideal for locking your bike to lamp posts or awkward shaped railings, but is much more secure than a cable lock. Some people also find chain locks easier to carry than a D-lock.

Kryptonite Evolution

Kryptonite Evolution

£45

Sold Secure gold rated, this is a good lock to choose for more valuable bikes. Unlike some Gold-rated locks, it's not too outrageously heavy to carry around either. It's also available in mini sizes which are easier to fit into a bag or even large jacket pocket. Comes complete a bracket for carrying the lock on your bike frame.

Jake's tip: If you have a pannier rack on your bike, why not carry your D-lock threaded through the rack itself instead of having to use the (sometimes plasticky and awkward) mounting bracket that comes with the lock? If you find it rattles, just secure it with an elastic bungee or old inner tube. Whatever you do, don't carry the lock dangling from your handlebars: this will knacker your cables, and can interfere with the steering.
